A parliamentary source stated on Tuesday that the Supreme Judicial Council will respond within the next few hours to the inquiry regarding postponing the session to elect the President of the Republic to another day.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that the Supreme Judiciary has two options to determine the date for holding the session to elect the President of the Republic within the constitutionally specified period of 30 days.
He explained that the first option is to adopt the day of the election of the second deputy speaker of the House of Representatives as the date for the start of the time specified for the election of the president of the republic, and if this option is adopted, this Thursday will be the date for holding the election session.
He added that the second option is not to include official holidays within the specified timeframe, namely (Friday, Saturday, and January 1st and 6th), and based on that, the session to elect the President of the Republic will be scheduled for next week, with Sunday being the most likely date at present.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hebat al-Halbousi, decided earlier on Tuesday to postpone the session to elect the President of the Republic due to the lack of a legal quorum, noting that only 85 members of parliament were present.
Al-Halbousi said that he also received official requests from the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to postpone the session, in order to give more time for understanding and agreement between the two parties.
A parliamentary source told Shafaq News Agency that holding a session to elect the President of the Republic is now contingent on the approval of the Speaker of Parliament, an understanding between the major political blocs, and the opinion of the Supreme Judicial Council, as the constitutional deadline approaches, amid expectations that the session will be postponed.
The source indicated that there was an agreement between the Kurdish parties and the Coordination Framework to postpone the meeting, and that an inquiry was sent to the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, regarding the possibility of holding the session later.
The constitution stipulates that the president must be elected within a period not exceeding 30 days from the date of the first session of the House of Representatives. Calculating this period from the first session held on December 29, 2025, the time limit is close to the night of January 28, 2026.
