Developments in the political scene indicate a near breakthrough in the crisis of forming the cabinet after the rejection of some candidates for ministerial portfolios in Al-Zidi’s government. This was followed by political disputes and an exchange of accusations and statements regarding the attempt by some parties to obstruct the passage of the cabinet for political reasons unrelated to competence and eligibility for the position. Meanwhile, other parties confirm that there is a resolution to the crisis and a political green light to hold an emergency session during the parliament’s legislative recess in order to complete the vote on the remaining ministries in Al-Zidi’s cabinet.
The head of the political body of the National Tribal Movement, Abdul Rahman al-Jazaeri, told Al-Maalomah that “Parliament is determined to finalize the cabinet formation and vote on the remaining ministerial posts in al-Zidi’s cabinet. A letter has been sent to the Speaker of Parliament requesting an emergency session to vote on the cabinet.”
He added, “There is a move to complete the cabinet despite the obstacles that have delayed the vote on some ministries in al-Zidi’s government. The current focus is on completing the vote on the remaining ministries.”
He explained that “all obstacles to completing the cabinet have been removed, especially after the Hajj season and the Eid holiday. Therefore, things are moving towards a vote on the cabinet.”
For his part, independent politician Sheikh Haider al-Lami, who is close to Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, told Al-Maalomah that “completing the cabinet and filling the remaining ministerial posts in Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s cabinet is not a difficult matter, but rather requires agreement and understanding among the political blocs.”
He added that “finalizing the cabinet will be achieved through an agreement among the blocs on specific individuals for the vacant ministerial portfolios, and matters may be resolved and the cabinet completed before the 15th of this month through an agreement among the political blocs participating in the government.”
He pointed out that “the matter will not end with the candidates whose approval for the cabinet was rejected. Rather, other figures will be chosen to be presented for a vote in Parliament, especially since the political blocs have figures capable of managing the ministries, and they will most likely nominate other individuals for the ministerial portfolios. Therefore, if Parliament rejects some figures, the blocs will put forward others.”
In a related development, MP Iyad al-Jubouri, from the Azm Alliance, explained to Al-Maalomah that “Parliament is determined to hold a special session to complete the cabinet during the legislative recess, with the aim of filling the vacant ministerial positions and finalizing this matter.”
He pointed out that “completing the cabinet is an important entitlement for the current government, and it is not in anyone’s interest to postpone the session or obstruct the procedures for completing the government formation.” He added that “political blocs are required to cooperate in order to expedite the resolution of this issue, ensuring the completion of state institutions and their executive functions.”
