Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on Sunday that the unrest in the Strait of Hormuz had major repercussions on the country’s economy due to the disruption of Iraq’s oil exports, expressing Baghdad’s readiness to host talks between the Gulf states and Iran in order to reach a settlement in the region.
Hussein said in a joint press conference held in Baghdad with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi, which was attended by Shafaq News Agency, that “this visit is of complete and special importance, and comes after reaching understandings in Switzerland and signing the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, as well as coming after the formation of the new Iraqi government,” adding: “But despite the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the war is still ongoing in another form, and there are skirmishes and military operations on the outskirts of the Strait of Hormuz.”
He added that “Iranian-Iraqi relations are historical, geographical, cultural, religious, economic and strategic, and Iran is a neighboring and important country for Iraq,” expressing his regret that it was subjected to this war and attacks, and stressing that “Iraq’s position is principled and firm in rejecting war and aggression against any country.”
He explained that “one of the foundations of Iraqi policy is to reject war and solve problems through negotiations, and Iraq had an important role in communication between Tehran and Washington, and in creating an interactive situation between Iranian and American positions to lay the foundations for negotiations between the two sides,” noting that “unfortunately the situation has reached a state of war and we are against this situation.”
The Foreign Minister continued: “We discussed many topics, and I extend my sincere thanks to the Iranian Minister because he was always in constant contact with me, keeping me and the Iraqi government informed about the negotiations and the war. Now he explained to us the details of the negotiations that took place in Switzerland and the reaching of understandings with America.”
Hussein pointed out that “the ongoing war has led to many human casualties in many countries, including Iraq, which has been subjected to attacks from various sides, and also in the Kurdistan Region,” explaining that “Iraq has been exposed to a difficult situation, especially with regard to oil exports, as a result of the military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, which were the reason for not exporting Iraqi oil, and therefore it has a great impact on the Iraqi financial and economic situation.”
He added, “Relations with the Gulf states are not in favor of expanding the war, and we have put forward concepts related to ending the war because its continuation will lead to the destruction of the region,” stressing that “the region must protect itself, and one of the points that was put forward is that we will return to the Gulf states and Iran, and Iraq is ready to receive representatives of the countries to discuss the security and safety of the region.”
The Iraqi Foreign Minister concluded his statement by saying: “We are ready to serve both sides to end the state of war, and the presence of the Iranian Foreign Minister in Baghdad among his family and friends is very important at this moment.”
