Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Iraqi government has prepared a draft plan to restrict weapons to the state, indicating that it will be presented in the coming days and will include specific timeframes for its implementation.

This came during a dialogue session hosted by the Atlantic Council in the American capital, Washington, entitled “Iraq after September 30”.

The Foreign Minister confirmed that the Prime Minister announced that the deadline for completing the plan would be June of next year.

According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received by Shafaq News Agency, the session addressed the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the region, the prospects for Iraqi-American relations, the future of security cooperation and efforts to combat ISIS, as well as Iraq’s position on regional conflicts and the impact of sanctions imposed on Iran on Iraq and its economic relations.

The session also discussed the Iraqi government’s efforts to restrict weapons to the state and to deal with the issue of armed factions, in addition to border security and developments in Syria and their repercussions on Iraqi national security.

The dialogue also explored opportunities to strengthen economic relations between Iraq and the United States, and to encourage American companies to invest in Iraq, which would contribute to expanding the prospects for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

Talk of restricting weapons to the state has intensified in Iraq over the past months, culminating in Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi announcing that his government is proceeding with a plan to disarm armed factions in stages, with the process to be completed by June 30, 2027.

On September 21, Al-Zaydi said that armed factions would be given a 90-day grace period during which they would refrain from launching any attacks before moving to the stage of handing over weapons, stressing that the plan would be implemented in stages, and that restricting weapons to the state was a key focus of his government’s policies.

During a meeting of the State Administration Coalition last August, the political forces announced the necessity of restricting weapons to official institutions, coinciding with the end of the international coalition’s military mission in Iraq on September 30, the date to which some factions have linked their position on the future of weapons.
