Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi discussed on Saturday evening the closure of several border crossings between the two countries, the attack targeting Saudi Arabia, and the latest developments in Yemen, in addition to the meeting scheduled to be held in the Sultanate of Oman on Monday.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that Fuad Hussein received a phone call from Abbas Araqchi, during which bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed, as well as the procedures related to the closure of a number of border crossings, the reasons for taking them, and ways to address them.

According to the statement, the two sides also discussed the attack that targeted the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the measures taken in this regard, as well as the joint committee formed to investigate the circumstances of the attack.

The call also addressed the meeting scheduled to be held in the Sultanate of Oman with the participation of the eight neighboring countries, namely the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Iraq and Iran, to discuss issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, where Fuad Hussein confirmed Iraq’s support for this meeting, noting the participation of an Iraqi delegation in its proceedings.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments in Yemen, and stressed the importance of addressing all outstanding issues and matters through dialogue and negotiations, in order to reduce tension and enhance security and stability in the region, according to the statement.

This contact comes at a time when the region is witnessing an escalation after Saudi Arabia was targeted from within Iraqi territory, and the Baghdad government took a series of measures, including the dismissal of the commander of Maysan operations, the temporary closure of the border with Iran, and the development of inspection and control mechanisms at the border crossings.

Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Faleh al-Zaidi also agreed on Saturday to the Iranian side’s request to conduct a joint investigation into the discovery of drone launch platforms in the southeastern desert of Maysan Governorate, near the border strip between the two countries.
