The head of the Iraqi Investment Authority, Haider Makkiya, revealed on Thursday that the authority has decided to open the door to investment in “blue ammonia” in Basra Governorate in the far south of the country, noting that this substance has begun to witness a demand for its import, especially in Europe.
During a special dialogue session hosted by the “Al-Nahrain” Center for Studies in Baghdad, Makkiya considered blue ammonia to be “the future energy fuel project” in the world, indicating that a company had submitted an offer for this investment opportunity, which is to be established in the “Al-Faw” district of Basra.
He added that the commission has selected Nitra Vipaya, a leading company in this field, to oversee this project, noting that “blue ammonia” is the fuel of the future in Iraq amid increasing global energy demand.
Makkiya explained that Iraq could be among the countries producing this material within the energy route through its seaports in Basra, or overland through Syria and Lebanon, stressing that the country has entered a rapid race in the region to benefit from “blue ammonia” locally and globally within sustainable and long-term fuel.
