MP Mohammed al-Bayati called on Sunday for the adoption of a strict principle to prevent speculation in the parallel market and to protect three key sectors from price hikes, following the government’s decision to raise the dollar exchange rate.
Al-Bayati explained to Al-Maalouma that “the government has presented several justifications for its decision to raise the dollar exchange rate to more than 150,000 dinars per 100 dollars, a decision that will inevitably have repercussions on the markets.” He added, “Iraq’s financial and economic situation is difficult, and this is undeniable. However, after making this decision, the government must adopt a strict principle to prevent speculation in the parallel market, which leads to a sharp increase in the exchange rate, burdening the markets and driving up prices.”
He further stated that “there is a need to take immediate precautionary measures to bolster reserves of essential food commodities and prevent price increases, in addition to addressing the issue of medicines.” He emphasized that “if large segments of Iraqi society are harmed by price hikes, we will take a clear stance in support of various options.”
He explained that “our position will be based on what happens directly in the markets, and whether actual harm occurs to citizens.”
