The Information Agency/Baghdad –
MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi, from the Badr parliamentary bloc, predicted on Saturday that the presidential position would be decided on Sunday, following a final agreement reached between the two Kurdish parties.
Al-Moussawi told the Information Agency that “the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) have reached an agreement regarding the presidency, but the mechanism for resolving the issue has not yet been revealed, whether through an agreement on a single compromise candidate or through competition within parliament.”
He added that “Sunday may witness the official announcement resolving the long-standing crisis,” noting that “the forces within the Coordination Framework have finalized their position and left the vote to the MPs if the competition between the two Kurdish candidates continues. However, if a single candidate is agreed upon, there will be collective support to ensure his passage.”
PUK spokesperson Karwan Kazni had confirmed that the meeting between PUK leader Bafel Jalal Talabani and KDP leader Masoud Barzani last week was positive, which strengthens the chances of reaching a near-term solution to the presidential crisis.
