The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, met today, Wednesday, with the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Iraq, Joshua Harris.
A statement issued by the judiciary said that the meeting discussed judicial procedures after the end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq on September 30, related to entities and individuals who carry weapons in violation of the constitution and the law, as well as mechanisms for enforcing the principle of the rule of law on everyone.
These talks come in conjunction with the completion of arrangements related to the Iraqi-American agreement to end the military missions of the international coalition against ISIS by the end of next September, and to move to a bilateral security partnership.
The government and judicial authorities in Baghdad face a major challenge related to restricting weapons to the state and enforcing the rule of law, especially with the rise of political and popular demands to end the manifestations of illegal weapons and reduce the influence of armed groups outside the framework of official institutions, in order to ensure security stability in the country.
