The coordinating framework, which includes ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq, has begun negotiations to form the next government and distribute ministerial portfolios according to electoral entitlement, after the nomination of the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of the new Prime Minister.
MP Miqdad al-Khafaji, from the parliamentary Rights Bloc, told Shafaq News Agency on Monday that the Coordination Framework represents the largest bloc in the House of Representatives and has the right to nominate Nouri al-Maliki as a candidate for the position of Prime Minister, indicating that the elected President of the Republic will task al-Maliki with forming the next government.
Al-Khafaji added that Maliki will face many challenges, including the current situation in Iraq and the region, security challenges, and the economic crisis, but he will be able to form the government within the specified constitutional period.
He pointed out that there are negotiations inside and outside the coordination framework regarding the formation of the next government and the distribution of ministerial portfolios to the blocs participating in the government according to political entitlement.
Last Saturday, January 24, the Coordination Framework presented Nouri al-Maliki (75 years old), the leader of the State of Law Coalition and former Iraqi Prime Minister, as a candidate for the next government, thus bringing him back to the forefront of the Iraqi political scene.
The Iraqi parliament is scheduled to hold a session on Tuesday to elect the president, in preparation for tasking the candidate of the largest bloc with forming the government, amid confirmation from supporting political forces that Maliki’s choice enjoys broad political acceptance internally and does not face regional or international objections.
