First Iranian reaction to al-Zaidi’s visit to Washington: Regrettable and “humiliating to Iraq”

On Friday, Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader, commented on Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States.
Velayati said in a memo published by media outlets that al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States was “a regrettable trip, inappropriate in its timing, and insulting to the struggles of the Iraqi people throughout its thousands of years of history,” as he put it.
Velayati considered the Iraqi Prime Minister to be a “young and inexperienced” person.
Velayati emphasized that Zaidi traveled to the White House at a time when “the mourning ceremonies for the death of the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had not yet ended, and he did not show any sign of sadness or emotion during that visit.”
Al-Zaidi arrived in the US capital, Washington, last Monday, at the head of a high-level delegation that included a number of ministers, officials, investors and business owners, on an official visit that will last for seven days.
Al-Zaidi met with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where they discussed a number of issues of common interest to both countries.
On Tuesday evening, an informed source revealed that Iraq will sign more than 18 agreements with the United States in various fields, while indicating that there are agreements ready that will be signed soon.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s visit will result in the signing of more than 18 partnership agreements in various fields, including politics, economy, industry, energy, oil, education, health, investment and armament, and that these agreements will strengthen the partnership between Iraq and the United States.”
