Political analyst Hazem Hamad suggested on Saturday that the parliamentary session to elect the president of the republic, scheduled for Sunday, would be postponed until further notice. He warned that continued Kurdish “stubbornness” could plunge the entire political process into its most severe deadlock in years.
Hamad told Al-Maalouma, “Current indicators point to a high probability of postponing tomorrow’s session due to the failure of Kurdish political forces to produce a compromise candidate with national acceptance.” He explained that “the disagreements between the two main parties in the region have reached an impasse.”
He added that “each side’s insistence on its demands has prevented reaching understandings that would resolve the crisis over this sovereign position,” noting that “going to the session without a prior agreement means repeating the scenario of a broken quorum and wasting time.”
Hamad warned of “the danger of the political deadlock that the political process will face if the Kurdish dispute persists,” emphasizing that “this procrastination will hinder the formation of the government and open the door to disastrous possibilities that threaten the country’s overall stability.”
