The US State Department on Saturday called on the Iraqi government to take urgent action to dismantle pro-Iranian militias in the country “once and for all,” and to stop their ongoing attacks targeting international and local interests, including the Kurdistan Region.

A spokesperson for the ministry told Shafaq News Agency: “The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attacks launched by Iran and its supported terrorist militias against infrastructure in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” holding Iran and its allied armed groups “directly responsible for this escalation.”

On March 9, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during which they discussed the latest developments on the ground and the ongoing escalation in the Middle East.

According to the spokesperson, Rubio strongly condemned the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Iran and its allied militias, stressing during the call the need for urgent action by the Iraqi government, including the complete dismantling of these militias and the cessation of their ongoing attacks targeting international and local interests.

According to the spokesman, Rubio also stressed the need to ensure that Iraqi territory is not used as a launching pad to threaten the United States or the security of the region.

This statement comes at a time when the Iraqi arena is witnessing significant security tensions following the targeting of the US consulate in Erbil and the embassy in Baghdad, coinciding with attacks on oil tankers, which puts the Iraqi government before increasing challenges in controlling armed factions and protecting international missions.
