The US State Department on Wednesday threatened a broad economic campaign to cut off funding to Tehran, demanding that Baghdad fully engage in pursuing illicit financial activities to ensure its financial stability and protect its partnership with Washington.
This came in direct response to questions posed by Shafaq News Agency to the ministry regarding how to spare Iraq the repercussions of US sanctions in light of warnings from the State Administration Coalition about a “critical financial situation”.
The meeting of leaders of the State Administration Coalition in Baghdad stressed the need to shield the fragile Iraqi economy from the repercussions of international pressures, amid growing fears within political and banking circles of widening restrictions on dollar flows and foreign transfers.
A spokesperson for the US State Department told Shafaq News Agency that Iraq has embarked on a new path of full partnership with the United States, stressing Washington’s explicit support for efforts to prevent the use of Iraqi territory as a platform for attacks and to build a solid economic partnership, as emphasized by President Donald Trump during his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Washington in mid-July.
However, the spokesman clearly linked this support to the requirements of the regional financial confrontation, stressing the launch of what he described as the economic pariah operation with the aim of cutting off the lifelines of the Iranian regime and targeting individuals and entities involved in illegal financial transactions on its behalf, especially those linked to Iranian banks abroad.
The US State Department, via Shafaq News, issued an explicit call to the Iraqi government and the international community to support these measures and hold those involved accountable, placing the political and financial leadership in Baghdad before a “crucial obligation” to completely separate the arteries of the national economy from regional financing networks subject to international sanctions.
The US Treasury Department announced last Monday the launch of “Operation Economic Paragon” against Iran, under the direction of President Donald Trump.
According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent, this is an “unprecedented” campaign targeting Iran and “those who enable and support it.”
