The head of the Baghdad Generators Association, Dhargham Al-Shuwaili, confirmed on Saturday that generator owners intend to shut down all generators in Iraq at the beginning of next month, in protest against the failure to implement Prime Minister Ali Al-Zubaidi’s directives regarding supporting them.
Al-Shuwaili told Shafaq News Agency that “the measure comes in protest against the failure to implement the directives of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi regarding support for generator owners.”
He explained that “Al-Zaydi directed during our meeting with him to provide all generator owners with kerosene, including generator owners who do not have a fuel quota,” indicating that “the Prime Minister also directed to lift taxes and municipal fees on generator owners, in addition to granting generators a four-hour break daily.”
Al-Shuwaili pointed out that “the directives of the Prime Minister have not been implemented by the concerned authorities,” noting that “the Ministry of Oil has released the fuel quota for this month at a rate of 30 liters per KVA at a price of 400 dinars per liter, similar to the owners of buses and other vehicles.”
He added that “the ministry set the fuel quota for generator owners at only 30 liters per KVA, without taking into account the poor state of the national electricity supply, given that the hours of national electricity outages have reached about 18 hours a day.”
Al-Shuwaili stressed that “the Ministry of Oil’s procedures towards generator owners lack any kind of support that the Prime Minister had previously directed,” noting that the Ministry of Oil charges two million dinars when issuing the fuel book for each generator, while the number of generators in Iraq is about 135,000.
The head of the generators association in Baghdad concluded his statement by saying that “transportation costs are added to the price of fuel, bringing the price per liter to 450 dinars when it reaches the generator owner.”
