A government source revealed on Tuesday the agenda of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi during his official visit to Tehran, as well as the most prominent issues he will discuss with Iranian officials on Thursday.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that the two-day visit will address a number of issues, most notably de-escalation and bringing the views of Iran and the United States closer together with the aim of ending the war completely, in addition to discussing the establishment of an economic partnership that serves the countries of the region.
He added that Al-Zaidi will emphasize during his talks the importance of coordinating with Tehran regarding supplying Iraq with the gas necessary to operate power plants, in conjunction with the implementation by the American company General Electric of the comprehensive plan to secure electrical power in the country, indicating that the continuation of fuel supplies is a basic condition for the success of the project.
The source explained that the visit will also include discussions on a range of economic understandings, and Iraq is expected to provide a sovereign guarantee to ensure the continued implementation of projects and contracts concluded regardless of changes in government, as part of the government’s efforts to end the electricity crisis through large investments in the energy and services sector.
He noted that the visit would coincide with a temporary lull in the military conflict and a halt to the exchange of strikes, with the aim of creating the right atmosphere for the success of the Prime Minister’s visit to Tehran and his return.
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed last Sunday what Shafaq News Agency had revealed earlier regarding Al-Zaidi’s expected visit to Tehran at the end of this week, announcing that preparations and the agenda for the visit were being discussed, including the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding in areas of joint cooperation.
Al-Zaidi and the high-level delegation accompanying him concluded last Saturday a five-day official visit to the United States of America, which focused on launching a comprehensive and diversified economic partnership to support the Iraqi economy, expand investment opportunities, revitalize the local labor market, as well as enabling Iraq to open new outlets for exporting crude oil and increase production and refining capacities.
