Erbil: Disputes with Baghdad over the ASYCUDA system remain unresolved

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the Kurdistan Region and the head of the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gilan Haji Saeed, confirmed on Monday the continuation of disputes related to tariffs and the customs system between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government.
The head of the union, Haji Saeed, told Shafaq News Agency that “the problems related to tariffs and the customs system between the region and Baghdad are still ongoing, and a decisive decision to end this crisis has not yet been reached.”
He explained that the federal government implemented the ASYCUDA customs system and issued a number of decisions related to customs tariffs unilaterally, without consulting the Kurdistan Region.
He added that the emergence of obstacles and problems facing traders in the region and Iraq alike demonstrated the need for the regime to reconsider and reach an understanding and agreement between the two sides.
Haji Saeed pointed out that Iraq has border crossings, while the Kurdistan Region has official international border crossings that serve both the region and Iraq, which, according to him, requires reaching a joint agreement on tariffs and the customs system, especially the ASYCUDA system.
He stressed the continuation of efforts and discussions between the regional government and the relevant authorities in Baghdad, with the aim of reaching common solutions that end the problems related to the customs system and tariffs.
Haji Saeed’s remarks came on the sidelines of the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry signing an official membership agreement with the global car manufacturer “Mercedes”, making it a member of the Chamber.
