The Ministry of Electricity announced on Thursday the commencement of work on the floating gas platform project in the Khor al-Zubair area, setting June 1st as the deadline for its completion and the supply of 500 million standard cubic feet of gas to the grid.
Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Moussa told the official Iraqi News Agency, as reported by Al-Maalomah News Agency, that “the floating platform project is currently underway, authorized by the Council of Ministers. A contract has been signed with the specialized American company, Excelerate, to handle the installation of the platform and the gas supply.” He explained that “the platform will be floating in the sea off the coast of Khor al-Zubair, and its function will be to receive ships carrying liquefied natural gas and pump it directly into the electricity grid after unloading.”
Musa added, “The ministry has fully completed all the pipelines connecting the platform to the power generation stations, and only the arrival and installation of the platform at the designated site remains.” He pointed out that “the agreement with the implementing company includes the supply of 500 million standard cubic feet of gas, without the ministry interfering in the gas source, whether from the United States, Qatar, or elsewhere, to ensure flexibility in supply.”
He emphasized that “the June 1st deadline is a binding government commitment for both the ministry and the implementing company.” He noted that “a meeting was held under the minister’s direction and in the presence of the director of Iraqi ports, during which suitable berths for ships were identified, the depth of the navigation channel and the waterfront were verified, and the technical specifications and safety requirements were finalized to ensure smooth operations without obstacles.”
