The Dukan Dam in Sulaymaniyah Governorate has approached the flood stage for the first time in years, with the daily rise in water levels continuing as a result of the heavy rains that the region has witnessed during the current season.

The director of the Dokan Dam, Kocher Jamal, said in a statement received by Al-Maalomah Agency that “the water level inside the dam is currently rising at a rate of 8 centimeters per day,” indicating that “the continuation of this rate may lead to the dam overflowing within the next ten days.”

He added that “the dam is currently less than one meter away from being fully filled,” noting that the amount of water coming in is still constantly increasing.

The Dukan Dam also overflowed in 2019 due to heavy rainfall, at which time citizens flocked to take pictures in front of the waterfalls cascading from the dam’s spillway.
