Due to Al-Halbousis ambitions for dominance the Sunni House is on the verge of collapseThe Sunni political scene is on edge, amid warnings of the imminent collapse of the Sunni Council due to the efforts of Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Party, to monopolize political decision-making and impose his absolute control over the resources and sovereign positions allocated to the Sunni community. This has provoked the ire of other political figures, who have begun to mobilize to curb these ambitions.
Current indicators suggest that the division and fragmentation within the Sunni community has reached its peak, fueled by al-Halbousi’s “policy of exclusion” against his partners and his persistent attempts to marginalize traditional and emerging political forces in the provinces of Anbar, Nineveh, and Salah al-Din, in order to monopolize political representation and governmental gains.
Informed political sources confirmed to Al-Maalomah News Agency that “sharp disagreements are plaguing the current Sunni alliances due to Halbousi’s insistence on imposing his will and passing narrow partisan agendas at the expense of the Sunni community’s general interest. This has prompted key forces to seriously consider withdrawing and declaring a unified opposition front to end the era of unilateral decision-making. The coming days may witness the official dissolution of the Sunni Council.”
In this context, Mohammed Daham, a leader in the Azm Alliance, affirmed that the Sunni Political Council, in its current form and structure, does not represent the Sunni community in any way. Rather, it has become an umbrella through which the wills of specific family and party figures are passed, usurping the rights of others.
Daham stated in an exclusive interview with Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the Azm Alliance has decided to suspend its participation in Sunni Council meetings as a result of being systematically and directly targeted by an influential political entity within the Council.” He specifically identified the Taqaddum Party, headed by Mohammed Halbousi, as being behind these moves and obstructing Azm from obtaining its legitimate political and electoral entitlements.
He added that “this unilateralism “Attempts at exclusion will soon bring down the council,” he said, explaining that “if the Azm Alliance makes a final decision to withdraw, this council will collapse entirely and disintegrate completely, becoming a thing of the past.”
It is worth noting that a number of MPs from various Sunni alliances have threatened to withdraw following disagreements with Halbousi.
For his part, Zuhair al-Jalabi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, accused Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Party, of working to fragment the unity of the Sunni community in order to achieve narrow political and personal gains, stressing that the latter’s actions have become an obstacle to the stability of the community’s political entitlements.
Al-Jalabi told Al-Maalouma, “Mohammed al-Halbousi, head of the Progress Party, is deliberately seeking to divide and fragment the Sunni ranks to serve his own agendas and personal interests,” indicating that “this approach has created deep rifts and disagreements within the political landscape of the community.”
He added that “Al-Halbousi is trying to impose his will and advance his sectarian and personal interests at the expense of the Sunni community’s interests,” noting that “monopolizing political decision-making and rejecting genuine partnership is what has led to these deadlocks.”
