The Diyala Provincial Council denied on Saturday that the Ministry of Water Resources had abandoned the idea of building a submerged dam on the Diyala River, which represents a hope that the people have been waiting for for more than half a century.
Council Chairman Omar Al-Karawi explained to Al-Maalouma that “the news reported by some websites regarding the Ministry of Water Resources abandoning the idea of building a submerged dam on the Diyala River is inaccurate, and we deny it completely,” stressing that “the Ministry sent a committee that includes experts to conduct a field study of the nature of the dam and the optimal locations for the possibility of establishing the project.”
He added that “the project, which the people have been waiting for for more than half a century, would bring about a qualitative shift in maximizing the use of water and increasing the quantities in the river basin, thus ensuring the provision of large quantities for irrigating orchards and agricultural lands on the banks of the Diyala River, as well as the possibility of using the dam in the tourism sector.”
Al-Karawi pointed out that “building a submerged dam is not an easy project, but rather it is subject to intensive engineering studies to reach the final decision regarding the material costs and the ideal location,” noting that “the matter needs more time, in light of the ministry’s commitment to proceed with the project.”
He emphasized that “the final decision rests with the engineering committee, comprised of experts, to determine the method, mechanism, and location from which the dam’s construction can proceed.”
