On Sunday, the northern port of Umm Qasr witnessed the arrival of six multi-ton commercial vessels, indicating a marked improvement in maritime traffic and a gradual return of activity to the docks after a period of decline due to navigation disruptions in the region.

The Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency that “the docks of the northern Umm Qasr port are witnessing a remarkable increase in commercial activity and an improvement in handling rates, after the arrival of six commercial ships with various cargoes, including containers and heavy loads.”

Al-Fartousi added that “among the arriving ships was a giant container ship belonging to (MSC) that docked at berths 14 and 15,” indicating that this “reflects the gradual return of operational momentum to the port.”

Iraq topped the list of countries most affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during March 2026, after recording the highest percentage decline in crude oil exports among the Gulf producing countries, amounting to 82%.

Earlier today, shipping data reported by The Times revealed that traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, with more than 600 large commercial vessels stuck in the area, amid strict transit procedures imposed by Iran on ships allowed to pass through.
