Wafa Muhammad Karim, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, confirmed that there is a practical initiative to legislate the oil and gas law, noting that the oil revenues from oil exported from the region reach Baghdad and enter the state treasury.
Karim told Al-Maalomah, “There is a practical initiative to move forward with the oil and gas law, as previous sessions witnessed problems between Baghdad and Erbil, especially since the region was exporting oil without an agreement with the government, which was deducting from the budget.”
He added that “last September saw an agreement to deliver oil to SOMO, and therefore the region’s oil is now practically being sold by the national marketing company.”
He explained that “oil revenues from sales through SOMO, including those from the Kurdistan Region, go into the state treasury. Therefore, the revenues reach Baghdad. In return, this initiative will pave the way for the enactment of the oil and gas law in the coming days.”
