Abdul Samad al-Zarkoushi, a member of the Coordination Framework, confirmed on Wednesday that next Saturday’s meeting will officially decide on the candidate for the next prime minister.
Al-Zarkoushi told Al-Maalouma, “The forces within the Coordination Framework are determined to finalize their nomination for the next prime minister during an important meeting to be held next Saturday.” He noted that “the available indicators suggest there are between three and four candidates whose names have been put forward, including Nouri al-Maliki, from whom one will be chosen and presented as the Framework’s official candidate.”
He explained that “al-Maliki remains a strong candidate, and his chances are supported by the majority of the Coordination Framework’s forces to assume the premiership,” adding that “Saturday’s meeting will be decisive in determining the final choice.”
Al-Zarkoushi affirmed that “the forces within the framework are committed to proceeding with the selection of the candidate according to the constitutional timelines and presenting him to the President of the Republic for his official appointment to form the cabinet,” stressing that “expediting the formation of a fully empowered government is of paramount importance given the exceptional circumstances Iraq is experiencing, particularly regarding financial, economic, and security matters.”
