Informed sources revealed on Sunday that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi intends to make an official visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran, at the end of this week.
Sources told Shafaq News Agency that “Al-Zaidi’s anticipated visit to Tehran comes within the framework of an Iraqi diplomatic move aimed at strengthening Baghdad’s role in reducing regional tensions, as Al-Zaidi will carry an Iraqi initiative aimed at contributing to ending the current military escalation between Iran and the United States, and pushing towards opening channels for dialogue between the two sides.”
She added that “Al-Zaidi had presented this vision during his meeting last week with US President Donald Trump in Washington, where the idea was welcomed and supported by the American side as a step that could contribute to containing the crisis and preventing the confrontation from widening.”
She indicated that “Al-Zaidi will propose during his visit to Tehran the idea of Baghdad hosting a meeting that brings together officials from Iran and the United States in the coming period, with the aim of bringing viewpoints closer and preparing the ground for direct or indirect dialogue between the two sides, within the framework of Iraqi efforts to reduce tensions and avoid further escalation that may affect the security and stability of the region.”
Al-Zaidi and the high-level delegation accompanying him concluded on Saturday a five-day official visit to the United States of America, which focused on launching a comprehensive and diversified economic partnership to support the Iraqi economy, expand investment opportunities, revitalize the local labor market, and enable Iraq to open new outlets for exporting crude oil and increase production and refining capacities.
Al-Zaidi arrived in Qatar on Sunday for an official visit, which, according to the government statement, is to offer condolences on the death of the former Emir of Qatar.
The Prime Minister is expected to conduct a regional tour in the coming days that includes Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, after visiting Iran, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations on all levels, especially with regard to the energy file, in light of the escalating security tensions in the region, and the continued disruption of energy supply chains in the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the mutual military strikes between America and Iran.
It is worth noting that Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader, commented on Friday on al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States, describing it as “an unfortunate trip, inappropriate in its timing, and insulting to the struggles of the Iraqi people throughout its history spanning thousands of years,” as he put it .
Velayati described the Iraqi Prime Minister as a “young and inexperienced ” person.
