The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in the House of Representatives, Shakhwan Abdullah, revealed on Tuesday that candidates for ministerial portfolios from the Democratic Party and the State of Law Coalition have submitted official appeals to the Supreme Federal Court to question the legitimacy of the session granting confidence to the new federal government headed by Ali al-Zidi.
Abdullah told reporters in Erbil, as reported by Shafaq News Agency, that the complaints and objections of those candidates relate to the mechanism by which the House of Representatives refused to vote in their favor during that session, adding that there are documents and recordings that prove procedural violations occurred during the voting process for ministerial portfolios.
He explained that these procedures represent a violation of paragraph four of Article 76 of the Iraqi Constitution, and a violation of the internal regulations of Parliament due to “the failure to manage the session with complete impartiality,” stressing that the final word now rests with the Federal Court and we await its final ruling in this case.
The Iraqi parliament voted last Thursday (May 14) to grant confidence to the Al-Zidi government and its ministerial program with 14 ministers, while the vote on the remaining 9 ministries was postponed until after the Eid al-Adha holiday due to the continuation of political disputes over the distribution of portfolios, amid reports of international warnings against the inclusion of armed factions in the new ministerial formation.
