British oil company BP confirmed on Tuesday its commitment to supporting the Iraqi Oil Ministry’s plans to develop “giant oil fields” in Iraq, particularly Rumaila and Kirkuk fields.

A statement from the Ministry of Oil quoted the General Manager of BP Iraq, Zaid Al-Yassiri, as confirming his company’s commitment to supporting the plans of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, and to continuing to implement development programs according to the highest technical and engineering standards, in line with the Ministry’s goals to increase production and improve the infrastructure of oil fields.

According to a statement from the ministry, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, Al-Yasiri reviewed, during his meeting with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Extraction Affairs, expert engineer Basim Muhammad Khudair, the details of the work carried out within the joint projects.

According to the statement, the extraction agent discussed with the general manager of BP Iraq branch the prospects for developing the Rumaila field and the Kirkuk fields development project, during an official meeting held on Tuesday, as part of following up on the implementation of the strategic plans for the oil sector in the country.

The ministry statement said that “the meeting included a detailed review of the progress of work underway in the Rumaila field, one of the largest oil fields in Iraq and the world, in addition to discussing the current stages of the Kirkuk fields development project, the percentages of completion achieved, as well as the technical and administrative challenges facing the implementation of the projects, and the ways to address them to ensure adherence to the approved timetables.”

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Extraction Affairs stressed, according to the statement, the need to accelerate the pace of work on strategic oil projects, stressing the importance of adhering to internationally approved technical and engineering standards and following best practices in development and production operations, given their pivotal role in increasing production capacities, enhancing the stability of oil supplies, and supporting the national economy.

Khudair pointed out that “the ministry is paying great attention to the development of giant fields, foremost among them Rumaila and Kirkuk fields, as they represent fundamental pillars in Iraq’s plans to raise production rates and improve the efficiency of investing oil wealth,” while stressing at the same time “the importance of introducing modern technologies and smart systems in managing oil reservoirs, which contributes to reducing operating costs and achieving long-term production sustainability.”

The Undersecretary also stressed “the need to focus on developing and qualifying national staff working in the oil sector, through advanced training programs and transferring technical expertise from international companies, in order to enhance the capabilities of Iraqi personnel and ensure that the fields are managed by local talent in the future.”

The Rumaila field and the Kirkuk fields are among the most prominent oil fields in Iraq, and their development projects form an essential part of the Ministry of Oil’s strategy aimed at maximizing the benefit from national resources, increasing financial returns, and enhancing Iraq’s position in global oil markets.
