Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated Ali al-Zaidi on Saturday evening on his appointment to form the Iraqi government, expressing his hope to strengthen relations between the two countries in all fields.

In a congratulatory telegram sent to Al-Zaidi, Bin Salman said: “On the occasion of your appointment as Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, we are pleased to express to Your Excellency our sincere congratulations and best wishes for success and guidance, asking God Almighty to grant you success in serving Iraq and its brotherly people.”

He added: “We look forward to working with your country to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between our two countries and peoples, and to enhance them in all fields. We wish your country continued health and happiness, and the brotherly people of the Republic of Iraq further progress and prosperity,” as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Several countries, including Syria, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Spain, Jordan, Britain, France, Germany, the United States, the United Nations mission, and others, congratulated Ali al-Zaidi on his appointment to form the new government in Iraq, expressing their wishes that he would succeed in forming his government and that this would be a means of good for the Iraqi people.

Earlier today, a parliamentary source revealed to Shafaq News Agency that there is a political agreement to pass the government of Prime Minister-designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi during this week, before a number of MPs head to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.

Last Thursday (May 7), Al-Zaydi presented the ministerial program of the new government to the Speaker of Parliament, Hebat Hamad Al-Halbousi, in preparation for circulating it to the members of Parliament and studying it, with the names of the government formation to be submitted later.

On April 27, 2026, President Nizar Amidi tasked Al-Zaidi with forming the new government after he was nominated by the Coordination Framework to succeed Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

On April 27, the ruling Shiite coalition forces in Iraq announced the nomination of Ali al-Zidi for the premiership, after Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Nouri al-Maliki withdrew from the race for the position.
