Informed sources revealed on Wednesday that the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” factions are intensifying their meetings to decide on their response to the Saudi bombing that targeted the Popular Mobilization Forces last month, ahead of the deadline expiring tomorrow, Thursday, and Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s scheduled visit to Riyadh.
Sources told Shafaq News Agency that “the armed factions are serious about a military response to Saudi Arabia, but there is high-level political and governmental pressure on the factions to prevent them from any military response to Saudi Arabia as the deadline approaches.”
She noted that “the armed factions have not yet decided whether or not to respond, given the meetings, pressures, and efforts to pressure the factions, especially with the approaching visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi to Riyadh in the next few days.”
The Popular Mobilization Forces announced on July 29 that at least 20 of its members were killed and 32 others were wounded as a result of attacks launched by American and Saudi fighter jets targeting official Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters in a number of Iraqi provinces.
As a result, political forces and armed factions in Iraq condemned the joint bombing carried out by Saudi and American forces.
The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” held a “remote” meeting on July 29 to discuss the response to the “American-Saudi” bombing.
Informed sources told Shafaq News Agency that the meeting was held remotely to avoid a face-to-face meeting for fear of it being targeted, following the strikes that targeted sites belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces.
She added that the meeting discussed options for responding to the strikes attributed to the United States and Saudi Arabia, including the possibility of carrying out a military response or refraining from one.
On Monday, an informed source revealed that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will visit Saudi Arabia next week.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the past few days have witnessed contacts by international, regional and internal political parties, in order to ease tensions between Baghdad and Riyadh, and those parties have succeeded in doing so.”
He added that “following the mediations, it was decided that Al-Zaidi’s postponed visit to Saudi Arabia will take place next week, during which security, economic and investment issues will be agreed upon.”
Al-Zaidi had cancelled his visit to Saudi Arabia, which was scheduled for last Thursday, one day after the Saudi-American strikes against the Popular Mobilization Forces.
