KDP leader Massoud Barzani said on Monday he did not regret having the referendum pleaded with the consequences, while admitting that relations with the United States had been badly damaged after federal forces were deployed in the disputed areas.
Barzani said in his first interview with US radio station NPR after the referendum in the Kurdistan region and published excerpts including journalist Jean Aref, who conducted the dialogue, “I do not regret the holding of the referendum.”
“We expected to close the border and start economic measures after the referendum, but we were not expecting a military attack from Iraq,” Barzani said.
He pointed out that Russia’s position on the measures taken by Baghdad was more positive than America. Stressing that Kurdistan is re-evaluating its relationship with Washington in comparison to its recent position.

The Barzani announced the rejection of extension of the term of the presidency of the Kurdistan region, which ended earlier this month, and called for the distribution of power to the executive branch, legislative and judicial.
