On Monday, Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani called for a change in the mechanism for electing the Iraqi president, a position reserved for the Kurds. He proposed that the position be filled by a candidate chosen by the Kurdish parties and blocs, and not be exclusive to the two main parties in the region (the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan).
This came in a message he addressed to the Kurdish public opinion in particular and the Iraqi public in general. Barzani said that “with regard to the position of President of the Republic of Iraq, the conviction should be established among all Kurdish parties that this position is the share of the Kurds, and in order for the President of the Republic to truly represent the people of Kurdistan, the mechanism for electing him must be changed, and no party should consider this position to be private property or a monopoly of theirs.”
The Kurdish leader suggested that the election mechanism should be as follows: either a person is designated by the Kurdistan Parliament as a representative of the Kurds to assume the position of President of the Republic, or all Kurdish parties meet and agree on a person for this position, or the Kurdish deputies and blocs in the Iraqi Parliament choose a person to assume the position.
Barzani noted that “it is not a requirement that the person chosen for the position of President of the Republic be from the Kurdistan Democratic Party or the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan; rather, he can be from another party or an independent figure,” stressing that “what is most important is that this person enjoys Kurdish consensus and represents the people of Kurdistan in assuming the position of President of the Republic of Iraq.”
