The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Sabah al-Nu’man, confirmed on Thursday the strict adherence to the timetable set for ending the mission of the international coalition in Iraq by September 30, noting that the withdrawal of forces is proceeding “at an accelerated pace” in parallel with intensive plans to restrict weapons to the state.
Al-Nu’man said in a press conference attended by a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, “The date of September 30 was set through high and continuous coordination by a technical security committee concerned with determining the frameworks and confirming the full readiness of the Iraqi security forces,” noting that “the withdrawal process of the coalition forces is witnessing a great acceleration according to the plans set.”
He added that “the completion of national sovereignty will culminate in the complete withdrawal of the international coalition,” noting that Iraq will move after this stage to “the principle of sustainable bilateral relations based on joint security and intelligence cooperation with various countries.”
In the context of the internal security file, Al-Nu’man stressed the state’s keenness and seriousness in regulating the issue of weapons and confining them to the hands of the official institution, explaining that “the weapons that preserved and protected the land should be fully under the legitimate and legal umbrella of the state.”
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief revealed that there is “intensive work and field and structural plans being implemented to carry out the directives of the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, aimed at strengthening the level of coordination and joint work between the various ministries and intelligence and security agencies,” to ensure the protection of security and stability during the upcoming transitional phase.
