Iraqi authorities have decided to close the Green Zone, which includes the parliament building and government headquarters, in conjunction with the vote on the new government headed by Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi, scheduled for today, Thursday.

A security source told Shafaq News Agency that the Green Zone in the center of the capital was closed from the direction of Baghdad Airport Road, with entry permitted only to those with badges, as part of preparations for the House of Representatives session to vote on the new cabinet.

The source added that the closure will begin after midday today, noting that the area is currently open (until the time of writing).

The Iraqi parliament is scheduled to hold its session at 5 pm on Thursday to vote on the ministerial cabinet of the new government headed by Ali al-Zidi.

This comes after a political debate that has continued over the past few days regarding the timing of the cabinet announcement, amid ongoing disagreements between some political forces over the distribution of ministerial portfolios.

Al-Zaydi was tasked by the President of the Republic with forming the government on April 27, 2026, succeeding Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
