On Saturday evening, a deputy close to Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, accused caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani of obstructing the coordination framework meeting, confirming what Shafaq News Agency had published regarding the postponement of the meeting at al-Sudani’s request.
MP Othman Al-Shaibani said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that what he described as “the one clinging to the second term, along with two of the leaders of the framework, disrupted today’s session to buy time and open the door to foreign interventions that affect the national decision.”
A political source revealed to Shafaq News that the coordination framework meeting, scheduled to be held Saturday evening at the home of the leader of the Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, has been postponed until next Monday.
The source explained that the request for postponement came through the front of those who object to the nomination of Maliki or those who have his support, with the aim of gathering the largest number of votes from the leaders of the framework to support the nomination of Sudani for a second term or to ensure the removal of Maliki.
He added that a Sunni leader had stepped in to pressure some of the framework’s forces to join the Sudanese team, but the efforts were unsuccessful, which led to a request for postponement to gain time and adopt a new plan to secure the second term.
These developments come at a time when the government formation process has entered a critical constitutional phase, following the election of Nizar Amidi as President of the Republic on April 11, which requires the largest parliamentary bloc to present its candidate for Prime Minister within a maximum period of 15 days.
