The head of the New Generation Movement bloc in the House of Representatives, Sarwa Abdul Wahid, announced on Friday that she had collected the signatures of about 200 MPs to hold a special session to elect the President of the Republic, while noting that the Kurdistan Democratic Party had refrained from signing and refused to hold the session.
Abdul Wahid said in a post on the “X” platform, which was followed by Al-Maalomah, that “about 200 MPs from various political blocs signed a request to hold a special session to elect the President of the Republic, with the exception of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which refrained from signing and refuses to hold the session.”
She added that “the Democratic Party is trying to transfer the experience of disrupting the Kurdistan Region Parliament to the Iraqi Parliament, especially since more than a year has passed since the region’s elections without a government being formed,” indicating that “this approach requires a clear and firm stance.”
Abdel Wahid stressed that “no entity can be allowed to control the fate of the people or obstruct the work of state institutions,” noting that “the continued attempts to prevent the convening of parliament and the election of the president are unacceptable actions.”
The Speaker of Parliament called for “exercising its powers and responding to the MPs’ request to set a date for an extraordinary session, in order to ensure the continuation of the constitutional process and prevent any obstacles from being placed in its way.”
