Economist Bassem Antoine explained on Monday that the next government will face a continuing challenge due to its reliance on a rentier economy based primarily on oil, stressing that this dependence cannot be easily eliminated.

Antoine told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “any incoming government, whoever it may be, will face great difficulty in addressing the rentier economy, its characteristics and features, in light of the increase in salaries, expenses and new appointments, which constitutes a great burden on the general budget.”

The expert pointed out that the main obstacle lies in trying to get rid of the rentier economy, stressing that the ideal solution is to move to a diversified economy that includes oil, gas and industry, so that Iraq can establish a sound and sustainable economic base.

He pointed out that “the country has always suffered from a budget deficit and a debt-ridden economy, making the task of reform difficult and complex for the next government.”
