A security source in Anbar province announced on Wednesday the start of the evacuation of US and international coalition forces from Ain al-Assad Air Base in western Anbar towards Harir Air Base in Erbil and Jordan, amid reports that the withdrawal is “tactical.”
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “US and international coalition forces have unexpectedly begun evacuating their troops at a rapid and sudden pace from Ain al-Assad Air Base in the al-Baghdadi district of Hit, western Anbar, towards Harir Air Base in Erbil province and Jordan, as part of a US plan to transfer most of its soldiers to northern Iraq.”
The source added that “large American convoys, supported by air cover, moved from Ain al-Asad Air Base towards the Baiji road in Salah al-Din Governorate, reaching Harir Air Base, while other convoys moved towards Jordan via the al-Walid border crossing west of Anbar.” The source indicated that “security forces stationed inside the Ain al-Asad Air Base building monitored the movement of large American convoys towards the northern governorates,” explaining that “the movement of American convoys from Ain al-Asad Air Base towards Harir Air Base is still ongoing.” The source further explained that “the movement of American convoys from Ain al-Asad Air Base coincided with heavy aerial activity by the international coalition to secure the convoys’ movement to their designated locations.”
