The mayor of Rutba district, Imad al-Dulaimi, announced on Monday that the Iraqi-Jordanian electricity interconnection project has entered its final stages, expecting the completion of the linking line between Rutba and al-Qaim within the next three months, which will contribute to adding new energy to the national grid.
Al-Dulaimi told Shafaq News Agency that the Rutba district has been supplied for about three years by the electrical interconnection line with Jordan with a capacity of 132 kilovolts and around the clock, indicating that after its completion the project will witness the reactivation of the line with a capacity of 400 kilovolts, including the areas of Rutba and Al-Qaim.
He added that the first phase of the project, according to available information, will provide about 200 megawatts to be added to the national grid, to be distributed through the National Center affiliated with the Ministry of Electricity.
He pointed out that this capacity represents an important addition to the country’s electricity system, but it is not enough to fully solve the electricity crisis, noting that Iraq still needs greater production capacities to keep pace with population and urban expansion and the increasing demand for energy.
Al-Dulaimi stressed that addressing the electricity crisis requires completing the Gulf electrical interconnection projects, in addition to increasing the production of local stations, including the Anbar thermal power plant project, to secure the country’s growing needs for electrical energy.
