Economic expert Safwan Qusay confirmed Iraq’s ability to secure salaries for six months starting May 1st, noting that the government has options including domestic borrowing or deducting remittances.
Qusay told Al-Maalouma, “The government is obligated to secure its legally mandated expenditures without hesitation. Therefore, it has alternatives to finance the deficit through domestic borrowing or deducting remittances until oil exports return to normal levels.”
He added, “The government has a range of options, and it is expected that employee salaries, social welfare payments, and food rations will remain unaffected, as the deficit will be financed through domestic borrowing. However, we must consider the period beyond the next six months.”
He explained that “Iraq can guarantee six months of salaries starting May 1st, but we must consider finding a new mechanism for exporting oil via tankers to compensate for the revenue shortfall without impacting the Central Bank’s reserves or devaluing the dinar due to inflation.”
