The US State Department issued a list on Thursday of travelers no longer eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. Citizens of countries participating in the program who have visited North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, or Cuba are now excluded. A statement from the State Department, translated by Al-Maalomah News Agency, indicated that “dual citizens of Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria who also hold a passport from a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program are prohibited from entering without a visa.”
The U.S. State Department announced an update to the Visa Waiver Program restrictions, barring certain travelers who have visited specific countries from re-entering the United States without a visa. The first category includes citizens of Visa Waiver Program-eligible countries who have traveled to or been present in North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen at any time beginning March 1, 2011. The second category includes citizens of Visa Waiver Program-eligible countries who have visited or been present in Cuba beginning January 12, 2021. In both cases, limited exceptions apply to individuals who traveled to these countries on diplomatic or military missions on behalf of a Visa Waiver Program member country.
The third category includes individuals with dual citizenship, specifically those who hold citizenship of both a Visa Waiver Program-eligible country and Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria. These travelers are not eligible for visa-free entry regardless of their passport.
The State Department noted that Consular sections may be able to reschedule interviews only in cases involving urgent and unforeseen circumstances, such as loss, a medical emergency, or the approaching university registration deadline.
