America supports whoever serves its interests... Divisions over the prime minister with the option of a compromise candidate being floatedThe picture remains unclear regarding who will assume the premiership in the next phase due to divisions within the coordinating body and the lack of agreement on a specific candidate. This is attributed to external pressures and interventions, particularly from the United States, which supports figures who serve its interests and objectives. This issue may be the crux of the disagreement: whether to bring in a candidate independent of the US administration, renew al-Sudani’s term with American approval, or pursue a consensus candidate free from the pressures and internal conflicts surrounding the executive position.
Hussein al-Karawi, head of the organizing body of the Popular Movement for the Belt and Road Initiative, told Al-Maalomah, “Everyone is now aware of the approach and path taken by the caretaker prime minister. He is far removed from the programs he once believed would liberate Iraq from the White House’s influence.”
He added, “Al-Sudani has contradicted his previous statements, and it is likely there is a behind-the-scenes agreement with America and its allies to use this as a stepping stone to power, especially since Washington and its allies, including al-Julani, did not object to his taking office.”
He explained that “the desire of all these individuals to renew the prime minister’s term stems from the fact that the current prime minister is merely a tool to serve the interests of Iraq’s enemies and steer the country towards the American axis,” stressing the need to confront anyone seeking a second term and to be prepared to take to the streets to reject it.
For his part, MP Jassim Al-Alawi, a member of the Coordination Framework, confirmed to Al-Maalouma that “the intensive meetings of the Coordination Framework will lead to the selection of a compromise candidate acceptable to all for the position of prime minister, and Basim Al-Badri is the most suitable candidate, expected to be agreed upon by the Framework’s leaders in the coming phase.”
He indicated that “the position will be decided this week with the agreed-upon compromise candidate, especially since the political forces are well aware that further delay in forming the new government is not in the national interest.”
He added that “expediting the nomination of the candidate and proceeding with the cabinet formation process aims to stabilize the political process and meet the immediate requirements.”
In a related matter, MP Mohammed Al-Shammari explained to Al-Maalouma that “the division within the Coordination Framework is due to differing viewpoints among the political forces regarding the mechanism for selecting the prime ministerial candidate.” Each party within the framework has its own vision for managing the next phase and the nature of the required government program.
He added that the continuation of discussions and disagreements in this manner is expected given the sensitivity of the political issue at hand, and that internal and external political pressures may contribute to pushing the parties toward holding a decisive meeting in the coming period. He further stated
that resolving the issue of the prime ministerial candidate still requires a comprehensive consensus among all components of the framework, and that reaching a final agreement depends on the level of political understanding and mutual concessions among the concerned parties.
