Ali al-Zubaidi, a member of the Coordination Framework, confirmed on Sunday that the Peshmerga forces are not directly under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, calling for addressing this issue to ensure unified security decision-making in the country.
Al-Zubaidi told the Information Agency, “The Peshmerga forces possess their own weapons and organizational structure and do not receive orders from the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, which necessitates reorganizing this matter within constitutional and legal frameworks.”
He added, “The continued existence of armed forces outside the federal military command structure necessitates finding mechanisms to ensure the Peshmerga’s subordination to the General Command of the Armed Forces.”
He pointed out that “confining the Peshmerga’s weapons and subjecting them to the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces represents an important step towards unifying the security establishment and strengthening the state’s authority over all armed formations.”
He emphasized that “security decisions must be unified and under the supervision of the federal government to preserve the country’s security and stability.”
