The political scene remains unclear regarding the cabinet of Ali al-Zaidi’s government, as no fixed date has been set for voting on the vacant ministerial portfolios, despite all political blocs announcing that they have submitted their candidates to al-Zaidi for him to choose from among them and go to parliament to hold a session to vote to complete the government. However, things seem to be getting more complicated, especially with the disappearance of excuses regarding the issue of delaying the submission of candidates for the vacant ministries, at a time when political parties confirm that there is external interference in the matter of deciding al-Zaidi’s cabinet by linking the completion of the government to the date of September 30, which is the date of the withdrawal of the American occupation forces from Iraq.
Bilal al-Nasiri, a member of the State of Law Coalition, told Al-Maalomah that “the State of Law Coalition has placed the coalition’s candidates for the Ministries of Interior and Higher Education in the hands of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, especially since the ministerial portfolios file has been delayed a lot, in addition to the fact that some ministries have become run by a minister of another ministry, which causes a state of pressure and confusion in the work of the ministers.”
He added that “the State of Law coalition is pushing for a session to be held as soon as possible in order to resolve the vacant ministerial positions and ensure that there is no delay in completing this matter.”
He explained that “the talk was about completing the cabinet after the Prime Minister’s visit to Washington, and then that was postponed until after the Arbaeen pilgrimage, and it was not achieved either. But today the talk is about deciding on the ministerial portfolios after September 30, and it is likely that there will be some back and forth regarding this date.”
For his part, Muhammad al-Fahdawi, a member of the Azm Alliance, told Al-Maalouma that “obtaining the Ministry of Culture represents a political and moral commitment from the other political blocs towards his alliance,” explaining that “mutual trust is the basis on which current political work in the country is based.”
He continued: “The alliance will not give up this entitlement under any circumstances or pressures exerted by some parties,” noting that there are prior and clear understandings and agreements regarding these portfolios with partners in the various political blocs.
He noted that “the names nominated for the positions of the Ministries of Planning and Culture were sent to the Prime Minister, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi.”
Meanwhile, the State of Law Coalition sent the names of its candidates for the Interior and Higher Education portfolios to the Prime Minister in order to choose the best among them to present to the House of Representatives for a vote.
In a related context, Coordination Framework member Uday Abdul Hadi explained to Al-Maalomah that “dialogues and meetings regarding efforts to create a comprehensive consensus to decide on the names of candidates for nine ministerial portfolios in Ali Al-Zidi’s government are still ongoing and are proceeding at an accelerated pace,” expecting “a session to be set for voting on the candidates during the coming month of September.”
He added that “most political forces have submitted their candidates for ministerial portfolios, including the security ministries, as well as the Ministries of Defense and Interior,” noting that “there are differences of opinion regarding some of the names.”
He added that “some forces have submitted more than one candidate for a single ministry, with the aim of creating flexibility in choosing names and resolving the issue of the remaining portfolios,” stressing that “this gives flexibility and smoothness in dealing with the lists of candidates.”
Abdel-Hadi added that “next September will be crucial in completing the vote on candidates for all remaining ministries without exception.”
