Political and parliamentary pressure is mounting to fill the remaining vacant ministerial posts in Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi’s government, with strong indications that the cabinet will be completed this week.
Despite the positive atmosphere surrounding the recent consultations, the “security ministries” remain a major obstacle to final agreement due to deep disagreements over their appointment.
These complex developments come at a time when the country is experiencing its most critical economic phase, exacerbated by the financial crisis resulting from the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupts the flow of two-thirds of Iraq’s oil exports to global markets.
This trade and maritime blockade has placed immense pressure on the state’s already strained finances, placing political forces under an unavoidable responsibility to fill the ministerial vacancies and avert an imminent economic collapse.
In this context, Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed the high level of governmental and political commitment to resolving the issue of filling the remaining ministerial posts, revealing a preliminary agreement within the coordination framework to finalize this matter this week.
Jaafar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the current political movement is witnessing significant understanding between the forces within the Coordination Framework and the other partners to proceed with completing the cabinet and appointing replacements for the vacant portfolios to ensure the stability of executive work.”
He added that “it is likely that the decision on the security ministries of Defense and Interior will be postponed until the beginning of October,” explaining that “the current focus is on passing the service and sectoral ministries first, within a specific timeframe, to resolve the disputes surrounding them.”
For his part, MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar revealed the existence of political disagreements regarding the completion of the remaining ministries, warning of the danger of the continued political quota system and its impact on completing the cabinet and Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s government program.
Abdul-Jabbar told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “there are still political disagreements hindering the completion of the remaining ministries, which directly affects the government’s work and its ability to implement its program.”
He added that “the continued quota system in distributing ministerial positions is hindering the finalization of the cabinet and delaying decisions on important issues,” calling on political forces to overcome their differences and move towards completing the cabinet formation.
Abdul-Jabbar pointed out that “the continued delay in completing the cabinet will negatively impact Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi’s government program and limit the government’s ability to fulfill its obligations and assigned tasks,” stressing the need to prioritize the public interest over political calculations.
