An independent Iraqi politician confirmed that Prime Minister-designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi intends to put approximately 14 ministerial portfolios up for a vote in the House of Representatives session scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, to grant him confidence.
Abu Mithaq al-Masari told Shafaq News Agency that “al-Zidi will present approximately 14 candidates for ministerial portfolios, which exceeds half of the government formation,” indicating that this “may guarantee him gaining confidence to become the head of government and not just the designated one, in the event that the cabinet is passed without delay.”
According to preliminary information, which is subject to change, obtained by Shafaq News Agency, the proposed cabinet of the Al-Zidi government includes: “Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Reber Ahmed, Ministry of Interior: Omar Al-Waili, Ministry of Planning: Yassin Al-Ithawi, Ministry of Industry: Mohammed Nouri, Ministry of Culture: Badr Al-Fahhal, Ministry of Justice: Khalid Shawani, Ministry of Environment: Sarwa Abdul Wahid, Ministry of Reconstruction: Nawzad Hadi, Ministry of Education: Miqdam Al-Jumaili.”
The positions of Deputy Prime Ministers are distributed among Fuad Hussein, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, and Muthanna Al-Samarrai.
In this context, a source in the National Council for Sunni Political Forces explained to Shafaq News Agency that the Ministry of Defense “was decided in favor of the Al-Hasm Alliance led by Thabit Muhammad Al-Abbasi by consensus among the components of the Sunni House.”
He added that a number of portfolios are still under negotiation within the Shiite political establishment, including the Ministry of Oil, which is witnessing competition between the State of Law Coalition led by Nouri al-Maliki, the Reconstruction and Development Coalition led by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and the Wisdom Movement led by Ammar al-Hakim, in addition to competition over sensitive security agencies.
The source indicated that some business figures who did not pass the electoral threshold may obtain positions in independent bodies, including the position of Governor of Baghdad for Firas Majisar, in addition to positions in the Investment Authority and others.
Earlier, a parliamentary source told Shafaq News Agency that there was a political agreement to pass al-Zidi’s government this week, before a number of MPs head to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
Prime Minister-designate Ali Faleh al-Zaidi submitted the ministerial program for the new government to Speaker of Parliament Hebat Hamad al-Halbousi last Thursday (May 7), in preparation for circulating it to members of Parliament for review, with the names of the government formation to be submitted later.
On April 27, 2026, President Nizar Amidi tasked Al-Zaidi with forming the new government after he was nominated by the Coordination Framework to succeed Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
