Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi confirmed on Thursday the end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq and the complete and final withdrawal of its forces by land, air and sea, noting the achievement of full and comprehensive national sovereignty, while renewing his government’s commitment to addressing the issue of weapons outside the framework of the state.

In a statement, Al-Zaydi described October 1st as “a serious start to addressing the issue of weapons outside the control of the state,” stressing “commitment to constitutional entitlements, according to a clear roadmap and agreed timetables that do not exceed June 30, 2027, and in accordance with the constitutional principle that leaves the decision of war and peace to the constitutional authorities, and prevents any military action otherwise.”

He added that the federal government “will work, in accordance with the constitution, to completely disarm all non-Iraqi armed groups present on Iraqi territory, in order to preserve the country’s security and stability and control its borders.”

The Prime Minister also noted that “the Iraqi government affirms its constitutional commitment to preventing the use of Iraqi land and airspace as a launching point or passage for any action that threatens the security of neighboring countries, and it rejects the use of the land or airspace of any country to attack Iraq, based on the principles of mutual sovereignty, good neighborliness and non-interference in internal affairs.”

Al-Zaydi continued, saying that the government “will begin supporting security institutions by purchasing the complete air defense system, to enhance the complete air sovereignty of the Iraqi state, and to enact the Popular Mobilization Forces Law and establish its position in the security system, as an integral part of it under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.”

This statement comes in conjunction with US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday that the last US troops would leave Iraq, saying it was time for Americans to return home, while praising Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, whom he described as “great” and someone he had supported from the beginning.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister of Iraq, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, announced yesterday the official end of the international coalition’s mission in the country, expressing his gratitude to the coalition countries for their support of the security forces during the fight against terrorism.

For its part, the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, announced that the United States and its partners in the international coalition have officially concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq.

The international coalition against ISIS in Iraq confirmed that there is no justification for the continued presence of armed groups in light of its withdrawal from the country.

This comes at a time when the Al-Zaidi government has placed the issue of restricting weapons within a separate timeframe from the withdrawal of the coalition.

On September 21, al-Zaydi announced a plan that begins with a 90-day truce during which the factions would refrain from launching attacks, in exchange for guarantees that they would not be subjected to American attacks, after which the process of handing over weapons would begin and be completed by June 30, 2027.

In parallel, political forces are working to negotiate with the factions regarding implementation mechanisms, while the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, announced on September 23 that a program and timetable for restricting weapons will be announced on September 30, while emphasizing that the issue will be addressed through dialogue and in accordance with constitutional and legal frameworks.
