Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi stressed on Saturday that there would be “no leniency with any corrupt person, regardless of their affiliation,” and that the government would continue to pursue those involved in these cases and recover the money they looted.
Al-Zaydi’s media office stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that he visited the Ministry of Interior and chaired a meeting that included the ministry’s undersecretaries and senior officers, during which security plans and the ministry’s efforts in various security sectors and services provided to citizens were reviewed, as well as discussing the most prominent challenges and ways to address them.
Al-Zaydi praised the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, its officers and members in promoting stability and community security, stressing that the ministry’s direct contact with citizens requires providing services with a high level of respect, in accordance with human rights standards and far removed from partisanship.
Regarding the anti-corruption file, he stressed that the Ministry of Interior represents the “hand of the government” in this file, directing the Integrity Commission, the Financial Control Bureau and the security forces to continue to follow up on corruption cases, which, according to the statement, have become a popular demand.
Al-Zaydi expressed his gratitude for the support the government’s anti-corruption campaign has received from the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Judicial Council, as well as political forces and tribal sheikhs.
The meeting also included a review of the mechanisms and controls for promoting and retiring officers, and a vote on promoting a number of officers from the rank of Brigadier General to Major General and from Major General to Lieutenant General.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces affirmed that all officers will receive their due promotions, stressing that “no officer or member of the Ministry of Interior will be deprived of their rights.”
