The Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Ali al-Zaidi, announced on Friday that the Sinjar Resistance factions will begin handing over their weapons to the state, and that Mount Sinjar will be under the full authority of the federal government and its security and administrative institutions, stressing that limiting weapons to the state and unifying security decisions are essential to protecting the people of the district, consolidating its stability, and ensuring its future.
Al-Zaydi said, during his meeting with a delegation from the leadership of the Yazidi Cause Alliance and the head of its parliamentary bloc, MP Murad Ismail, and the leadership of the Sinjar Resistance Units, that the decision to hand over weapons comes within the framework of building a state of institutions, protecting the unity of national decision-making, and ending the multiplicity of security decision-making centers, stressing that the state will guarantee the rights of the members of the Sinjar Resistance Units and the Women’s Units and their sacrifices, by organizing their conditions and integrating the qualified among them into the Iraqi security institutions in accordance with the legal and official frameworks.
According to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, the meeting witnessed a discussion of the service situation in the district and its needs for infrastructure and reconstruction projects, the issue of compensating those affected, and creating suitable conditions for the return of displaced persons to their areas, as well as addressing a number of administrative issues related to the management of the district and its institutions and government departments, as well as the management of the Sinjar Reconstruction Fund.
Al-Zaydi stressed that the Yazidis represent an authentic and important part of the Iraqi spectrum, and that this diversity represents a source of strength for Iraq and a national and human treasure, pointing to the crimes and injustices suffered by the Yazidi community at the hands of terrorist gangs.
He also pointed out that the government is committed to doing them justice, guaranteeing their rights, returning them to their areas, and addressing the aftermath of years of terrorism and displacement, and that the state will not allow Sinjar to become an arena for conflicts, nor will it accept the presence of any security or military authority outside the framework of the state.
The Iraqi Prime Minister directed that the Yazidi community be included in the project of one million residential plots, and that work be done to create the necessary conditions for the complete return of displaced persons to their areas, and to follow up on the reconstruction of Sinjar district and provide its service requirements, in a way that contributes to stabilizing the population and enhancing social and economic stability.
He also directed the formation of a high committee to prepare a comprehensive and thorough study of the reality of Sinjar district in terms of security and services, to identify its needs and the requirements of its people, and to develop appropriate solutions for them, as well as to follow up on the involvement of Sinjar Protection personnel in official security and service institutions, and to regulate their legal status, in a way that strengthens the authority of the state and supports stability in the district.
For their part, the head and members of the delegation expressed their full support for al-Zaidi’s steps, particularly those related to strengthening state authority, handing over weapons, integrating the “Sinjar Resistance Units” into official institutions, as well as combating corruption, implementing economic reforms, and strengthening Iraq’s foreign relations.
