On Saturday, Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi met with a delegation from Diwaniyah Governorate, which included members of parliament from the governorate, the governor, and the head and members of the local council, to discuss the situation in the governorate and its service and development needs. He also announced the launch of a plan to rebuild Diwaniyah and the intention to declare it the agricultural capital of Iraq.
Al-Zaydi stressed, in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that Diwaniyah Governorate deserves exceptional attention, due to its agricultural and economic importance, and the resources it possesses that make it Iraq’s food basket and agricultural capital, announcing the launch of an integrated plan to rebuild the governorate and improve its service, economic and agricultural situation.
According to the statement, the Prime Minister allocated one trillion dinars to the Diwaniyah Governorate, to be distributed as follows: 650 billion dinars to finance unfinished ministerial projects, foremost among them the Diwaniyah sewage project and the project to rehabilitate 30 residential neighborhoods, in addition to other projects, while 350 billion dinars are allocated to pay the dues of farmers.
He also directed the formation of specialized committees to monitor the implementation of projects and ensure their completion according to the specified timelines, and to address the obstacles that hinder their implementation, instructing to increase the water quota for Diwaniyah Governorate, to approve its agricultural plan, to support farmers, and to address agricultural reform problems, in order to enhance the governorate’s position as Iraq’s food basket.
The statement added that “Al-Zaydi directed that the province be given a share of the electricity produced from solar energy projects, in support of energy stability and to promote the use of clean energy sources.”
Regarding the housing file, Al-Zaydi pointed out that Diwaniyah is included in the million residential plots project, with a share of no less than 100,000 plots, allocated to the people of the governorate who do not own housing.
He directed attention to agricultural engineers and veterinarians, by granting them agricultural lands to invest in, which will contribute to the development of the agricultural sector and create new job and investment opportunities, as well as encouraging investments in the governorate and investing its resources and capabilities, stressing that the government will follow up on the implementation of this plan on the ground, and Diwaniyah will be facing a new stage of reconstruction and development, in a manner befitting its status and role in the agricultural and food economy of Iraq.
