Informed sources reported on Monday that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, along with his own team, is leading an intensive effort aimed at preventing Iraqi armed factions from becoming involved in the recent military escalation between Iran and Israel, even if the United States returns to direct participation in the confrontation alongside Israel.
Sources told Shafaq News Agency that “government contacts and pressure began last night and are still ongoing, and include leaders of major factions and others operating under different names or organizational fronts linked to well-known factions on the Iraqi scene.”
She added that “the Prime Minister stressed during his contacts the need to avoid any military or security action that would bring Iraq into the circle of regional conflict, and the government views with utmost seriousness any attempt to drag the country into the ongoing confrontation.”
The sources indicated that “the pressure exerted by the government has reached the point of threatening to take strict legal and security measures against any armed group that carries out operations or movements that could lead to expanding the scope of the war or using Iraqi territory in the conflict.”
Informed sources confirmed that “this movement enjoys broad support from the majority of forces within the coordination framework, which support the policy of distancing Iraq from the repercussions of the regional confrontation and preventing its territory from becoming an arena for exchanging military messages.”
Last night, Sunday, witnessed a military escalation between Iran and Israel, as the latter announced the detection and launch of batches of Iranian missiles towards its territory, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed targeting two Israeli air bases.
In response, the Israeli Air Force carried out raids on military targets, air defense systems and facilities inside Iran.
